dental scaling? I've decided to buy my own dental scaling tools but I am not sure of if I should use this daily or weekly because I have heard it can scrap your enamel is that true or not?
Dental Scaling?? I'd stopped seeing dentists from 99-06 after moving. In 06 I became a patient at a local dentist recommended by friends, and was pleasantly surprised to hear I'd only be needing regular cleanings. This went on for 2 years, the most recent cleaning about 7 months ago. I've moved again, and visited a local dentist today. They tell me I have "pockets", and will not give me a routine cleaning until I pay for a scaling on my molars. I decided to walk out, because I felt like I was totally being "sold". I've since looked into this procedure, and granted, it's legitimate. But, my personal dental care has not changed in 10 years, and this includes flossing. Is this just some new wave method of dental care that my prior dentists were somehow incapable of performing, that I just have to go through with? Or, am I just being "sold"? How can I have had normal visits up to 7 months ago, and now suddenly, with no modification to my routines, my gums are so gravely diseased? Any alternatives?
How long should i wait for next dental scaling? I scaled my teeth three months ago( a week before wearing braces). I think that i should do it again because i have the problem of gum recession. Also i am not satisfied with my dental Hygiene, although i try my best to keep them clean by brushing after each meal. My doctor told me that i should wait for six between two scaling. Is there any disadvantage if i scale them right now???
what is the result of dental scaling? im getting dental scaling soon and i want to know what's going to happen to my gums after i get it done. are my gums going to sore? is it going to swell up? is it going to stretch out because of the dental tools? does bleeding occur and does it hurt after the scaling?
Dental Scaling - Is Medical Irrigation a Scam? My insurance company doesn't cover medical irrigation as it is not necessary with dental scaling. Is medical irrigation during a dental scaling a "scam" for extra fees by dentists? Is it necessary or can I go without it.

Has anyone had dental scaling done in one visit? If so, how did you feel afterwards? Were you able to go out and do stuff? I have to get it done and they said they could do it in one or two appointments so I would rather do it in one and get it over with! Has anyone got that done in addition to fillings at the same time? I have to go back on Monday to meet with the billing office so they can review my insurance policy with what is covered and what isn't so just asking in advance if anyone had similar experiences!

Is dental deep scaling necessary for bone loss prevention? I have no cavaties and my gums have improved immensely, but the dr. says I have bone loss and wants to do deep scaling. Has any one had success with this? Also, one person suggested a paste made of proxide and baking soda that scaling was not necessary. Thank you. Thank you to the people that responded. It sounds like I should have it done. N
How much pain is involved during a scaling and root planing dental procedure? I'm really scared to go to the dentist, but I have had persistent problems with my gums (it's hereditary). I have been reading online that dentists will often perform a scaling and root planing procedure on patients with gum disease. I'm almost certain I will need this, but I have no idea what to expect. Should I request anesthesia? I realize that my fear of facing this and avoiding the dentist chair at all costs made the problem worse, but I'm such a baby with pain and doctors ...
Details of dental scaling and root planing? If you have had this done, did your gums bleed a lot during the procedure? What was your pain like after the novacaine wore off? I am going in tomorrow for the top half of my mouth and I am VERY worried! Also, if your dentist used irrigation, was there a lof of water in you rmouth at one time? Thanks for your encouragement and information!
Does this dental charge about deep scaling seem valid? Insurance pays 100% for DEEP scaling and root planing. But the dentist says he will charge for accompaning "irrigation". Does this sound like a normal charge? It's going to be $240.00 for the entire mouth. Thank you.
dental scaling, any help? thanks? im 16 and i brush only once a day and i went to the dentist last week and the dentist said i need dental scaling. if i change my brushing like if i start brushing 2-3 times a day, floss at least twice a day and rinse my mouth with plaque and cavity fighting mouth wash at least 3 times a day would it change anything, would i still need dental scaling?

Is dental scaling bad on teeth enamel? I had a consult with a dentist a few days back. I already suffer from flurosis (attributed to the mineral-rich water I used during my childhood). In addition to that she felt that I had a lot of dirt in my tooth and suggested dental cleaning.. I am just wondering if dental cleaning could be harmful for my teeth. When I surfed net, I got results saying that the effect of cleaning remains for atleast a week (in the form of sensitive tooth, painful gums etc). Will scaling remove the enamel cover of my teeth?
Why my teeth near the gum line become brownish after dental scaling? A dental scaling done is to clean and whiten the teeth. But would there be a possibility of the dentist scraping off a layer of tooth enamel causing the tooth to be exposed and became tarnished? So now what should I do? I am thinking of going to another dentist to solve this problem, I cant smile with brownish teeth. But I 've just cleaned my teeth, so what should the dentist do then. I have no faith in my previous dentist, it has been several weeks and the situation is getting worse. I am at lost and I do hope some angels will show up. Thanks guys.
Dental work. Has anyone had scaling done for a gum condition? This sounds really painful. I have to have it done. How much pain is involved? how much time off of work? Do they do it all in one visit? Didn't think of all these questions while at the dentist today. Am having 2 teeth puilled on Mon the we will schedule this procedure. He said I may have to go to a specialist. YIKES!
Dental scaling and root planing procedure explanation? Last week I had "deep cleaning" done. Or at least the doctor said so. The procedure for two quads took about 15-20 min. They didn't give me any anestetic but it didn't feel that bad. Only it wasn't any difference from the regular cleaning (or at least I didn't feel it). When I asked about it the doctor (actually hygienist) she said "oh you'll feel it after we are done.".. but we were done with 2quads. She is going to do 2 more. My question. Is there any difference between regular prophylaxis and scaling and planing that the patient actually can feel. From what I read about scaling it seems to be. I just don't want to be scamed
dental scaling while pregnant? I am 29 weeks pregnant and my gums are swollen and bleed when i brush, the dentist suggested getting deep cleaning and scaling done but they will apply some anasthesia. i am not sure if it is safe to get deep cleaning done while pregnant, did any of you get it done and had a safe pregnancy?
Bleeding While Dental Scaling? Hi, my gums are fine (no bleeding or anything bad like that), but when I go the dentist and the hygienist scales them they bleed a bit (I tasted a bit of blood twice, she sucked out a bit and I spat some out when rinsing). I want to know how common this is. My GF's gum bleed too during scaling as do my parents. Overall I regard my oral hygiene as good, as I brush 2-4 minutes a day twice a day with an electric brush and floss once a day no fail, I am trying to use mouthwash after each brush, but usually get it in honestly only a few times a week. I am trying to use a sulka brush as well regular (but more recently). Any ideas?
Is the same machine used for dental scaling/root planing and dental debridement? Six months ago I had scaling done and just a few days ago I had the debridement done. From what I've been reading a debridement is very painful, requires anesthesia and takes a while to do. It also is usually done prior to a scaling/root planing. Mine was not only done after the scaling but only took about 20 minutes and wasn't painful and done without anesthesia. Are the two procedures done with the same machine and can a debridement be done in that short a time? I just found out from my insurance of the two different codes being used and was surprised as both procedures seemed the same to me. Should I be suspicious?
has your cat ever went in for dental surgery? my cat is going in monday for a dental scale & polish and he has to have a couple teeth out.. how long do you think it will take him to recover? oh and he's going under general anaesthetic percy- could your ferrets be any cuter?! i just watched that whole clip.. absolutely adorable. & that tube thing is hilarious.
Can I take a dose of Ibuprofen before my dental appointment for Scaling/root planing? I have an appointment tomorrow for Scaling/Root planning. Last week (when the dentist did the first half of my gums) my jaw and cheek were super sore after the Novocaine wore off and I had a killer headache from the high pitched noise of the drill-like instrument they used. Long story short, I want to take some "preventative painkillers" before the procedure, but I'm not sure if I should. Will it had adverse side-effects if it mixes with the Novocaine? I'd love to hear from a dentist or a dental assistant, but personal experiences are also great too. Thanks in advance!
Dental question peridontal scaling? I am scheduled for this scaling, my teeth are fine and my gums are fine my dentist recommended this as a precautionary thing said it is great to remove and clean below the gumline. My question is this he told me they would numb my mouth and do it in quarters, does anyone know if there is a lot of pain when the novocane wears off? and is this a costly procedure? it is running me around 800.00 does this seem like to much? thanks
Are there cheaper alternatives to dental irrigation? My dentist has recently recommended dental irrigation with my scaling and root planning treatment, but the irrigation itself is $360 and not covered by my insurance. Does this seem too high and are there are less expensive options?
Not healing from a dental root & scale, could I be diabetic? I posted a message last week about dental pain that I have been experiencing since a root and scale that I had done over a month ago. I had some blood work done about 2 months ago and my blood sugars were at 116 which is slightly elevated but I did not fast before the test either. My dentist is not sure why my gums are not healing properly. They don't appear to be infected by looking at them but they are very sore and feel puffy. Could I be diabetic and not know it?
Home Dental Care & Safety. (Scaling)? Is it safe to debride/ scale my own teeth at home? I recently purchased a home kit for the scaling of teeth but wonder if it's safe and healthy to do this procedure myself. Is it possible that I may just make the problem worse?
Can I wait six months for dental planing and scaling? Or do it now? I was shocked at the bad check-up. Largest pocket is a 6. Usually they have all been good and my dental self-care has been better than ever. Not even the dentist can explain the rapid change from last year. The problem is, I am tired of spending money on dentistry. I have spent several thousand out of pocket in the last year after an accident required an implant. I stopped counting after $5000. No insurance left for the year and it would be nice to have a vacation instead of sinking more money into my smile. I still owe $1000 for the implant, which I will pay off in the next couple of months.
Dentists-what is your opinion? Now I am once again reluctant to go for deep scaling and root planning after? having read this article about using Laser Treatment: "Traditionally, gum disease was treated with a procedure called “scaling and root planing”. The procedure was about as unpleasant as it sounds. Performed by the dental hygienist, scaling and root planing involved using hand instruments to remove plaque and tartar. Unfortunately, since this technique didn't remove the biofilm that houses the bacteria, the effectiveness of scaling and root planning has always been somewhat lacking. Since we are committed to clinical excellence, we treat periodontal disease with the most advanced technology available in modern dentistry, micro-ultrasonic instruments and lasers. This combined use of technologies actually eliminates the infection rather than “manage the disease”, which has been the traditional form of treatment. How does the laser work? A diode laser is used in combination with a micro-ultrasonic hand instrument that... Google: Laser care for gum disease
Can you use the sliding scale program some dentisits offer if you have dental insurance? I need a lot of dental work done, which is going to cost a few thousand dollars. I am a military dependent (spouse) and have dental insurance. However, the insurance only covers about $1,000 per year (or so I was told). I need to have my teeth fixed this year. So I was wondering if you have insurance, will dentists still allow you to be part of the sliding scale program? Thanks.
How often does periodontal scaling have to be done? My mom is having a lot of dental problems right and has had periodontal disease for sometime but was seeing a dentist who wasn't really treating the problem. Now she is seeing a new dentist who just did scaling under the gums in June. He is saying she needs it again? Is it normal to have this procedure done this often?
Is it normal to get dental work without anesthesia? I have been to the dentist once a year & when he does deep cleaning, scaling etc on me i do not ever let him numb me, i am a true warrior who does not like the anesthesia as i have a high tolerance for dental work but is this normal?

Dental Question-Quadrant perio scaling? Two days ago (at age 42) I got my first 2 fillings because of toothbrush abrasion on my molars. The dentist had to give me a lot of novacaine because of the sensitivity and my mouth still aches. Tylenol and ibuprofen help, but don't eliminate the pain. Is this normal? I have a quadrant perioscaling scheduled next week and am a bit worried about pain. I know this should be more painful after the numbness wears off. Will most dentists give an Rx for pain meds? I'm a bit of a chicken when it comes to the dentist (no logical reason). Any suggestions on how to relax for this procedure? I'm nervouse! Thanks! The pain is where the injections were.

What are my chances of getting into dental school? I am about to transfer to another university in the Spring of 2009. Many of my core classes are out of the way and my GPA is 3.8 on 4.0 scale. Would I have a decent chance of getting into dental school if my DAT scores were good along with everything else??
Are there any dental clinics for a low income single woman in SJ based on a sliding scales? I work with a nice lady who makes about 7 dollars an hour, as a short order cook and her teeth are breaking off and rotting. She's very depressed in general and this is making her smile less. People are meaner to her because of how she looks. Rotten teeth and having no money to do anything about it can't make life any better. I feel bad, because I've been there, sort of before, with bad teeth and feeling like even having one cavity filled will break the bank, let alone a mouth full of root canals. I was able to finance my dentisty, luckily. She is in a situation 10X worse than mine. I'm sure nobody will let her finance, so I need to find a dentist in S. Jersey will do this work based on a sliding scale. This lady is seriously depressed and I feel like this could be one more problem to put her over the edge. Teeth are a necessity and having a mouth full of rotting painful ones cannot possibly make life any easier. Anybody know of any way to help?
Dental - What is fine scale and polish? I had a full debribement done on my teeth (i though it was so painful, that I was tearing!). I unfortunatly didn't go to the dentist for 3 years while in college as I had no insurance and the part time job I had barley covered tuition and such, but now I am back on dental track. I have to go back in 2 weeks for a fine scale and polish and wanted to know what that entailed.
Cavities filled or other dental work done while pregnant? I am about 3 and a half months pregnant and I know I have a couple cavities but I'm wondering if I need to wait until after I have my baby or not? I am also supposed to have root planing/scaling done too but I don't know if that is something that can be done while pregnant as well.
Dental question deep cleansing and root planning - for periodontal disease? The dentist is saying that my boyfriend has periodontal disease. The first step is to come in for a deep cleansing which will be 120.00 per quadrant. She is then saying that the second step is to schedule the surgery. I have read some things on this board that just mention the cleansing not the surgery also. If he has the deep cleansing (which I am assuming right now if the deep scaling and root planning) why would he need to schedule the surgery as well. Wouldnt we have to see if the deep cleansing worked first?
Is there chance of contracting disease like aids at a scaling procedure at the dentist? I just went for a dental scaling procedure. The dentist used one of those ultrasonic vibrating tools which gush out water, to remove calculus. There was some blood letting but that kinda normal in such a procedure I guess. Although I was the only one there that evening and the dentist did assure me that her equipment was sterilized I'm still worried on the worst case scenario like - is it remotely possible for an individual to contract aids or Hepatitis from a scaling procedure at a dentist. Or am I getting all worried for nothing. I would appreciate a really detailed answer here :( Uh..when I mean risk of transmission I'm referring to risk of transmission from tools used in a dental scaling procedure :| Hmm I think Im a bit too paranoid here anyway. I just went and asked the lovely dental assistant casually on what kind of precautions they took and she said that after every patient she'd wash the instruments used with soap and sterilize it in an 'autoclav' for 45 minutes. OK I have no idea of what that is but it seemed to sound like there was nothing to worry about - anyone with a dental or medical background here who could enlighten me on this issue?
I am having scaling and root planing done on my entire mouth in one visit tomorrow. Should I be nervous? I requested to have this done all at once due to babysitting issues with my son. The dental hygenist said she could and that she would work straight through. I am nervous about having this done all at once. Can you please share with me your advice or experience? Should I ask for gas or is the local paste they use enough? I had a regular cleaning last week which made a tremendous difference. I am really nervous about having pain in my teeth due to having the root manipulated.
Dental Professionals: What is the proper way to use a scaler? I have one and want to scale my teeth, but I do not really know how to use one. Are you supposed to lay the scaler flat on the surface of the tooth or are you supposed to use the tip of the point? How do you remove tartar? Please provide me with a detailed explanation Thanks. I bought one from a drugstore. COMPLETELY sterile.
Any ideas for a friend in need of sliding scale or free dental work? details below.? My good friends teeth are rotting out of her head! She has no insurance, and very little resources. All dentists in our area want tons of money up front. There is no saving these teeth, she needs them all pulled and given a set of false teeth. I am worried because she keeps getting these horrible infections which can abscess and kill her! She is a wonderful person who is raising two children on her own and somehow doesn't qualify for ANY kind of aid! I wish I could pay for this, but that's not an option either. I was just wondering if anyone out there had some ideas of where to turn for help?
