Dental Scaling

How long should i wait for next dental scaling?

I scaled my teeth three months ago( a week before wearing braces). I think that i should do it again because i have the problem of gum recession. Also i am not satisfied with my dental Hygiene, although i try my best to keep them clean by brushing after each meal. My doctor told me that i should wait for six between two scaling. Is there any disadvantage if i scale them right now???

  1. I would think you could cause even more damage to you gums. I wouldn't scale your teeth again until the dentist gives the "ok". (By the way, you're not doing this yourself, are you?) I was having problems with my dental hygiene, specifically with enamel erosion caused by acid reflux. Then I found a dentist's blog on which she talks about a natural sugar called xylitol. It's made from things like corn cobs and birch trees. You can get it in mint, gum, or granular (like table sugar) form. You have to eat at least 6 grams a day. Studies have shown that this amount of xylitol can actually prevent tooth decay. It kills the bad bacteria in your mouth, so they can't create plaque, which is what you're probably have problems with. Here's her blog: http://askdrellie.blogspot.com/ In addition to the xylitol everyday, she also recommends following this plan: 2x a day (morning and night) Rinse with Closys (available at Walgreens, Amazon.com, among other places). Brush with Regular Crest Anti-Cavity paste. Rinse with Listerine Antiseptic Rinse with ACT Anti-Cavity (alcohol-free fluoride rinse). I've used this system for a few months. At my last cleaning, my doctor barely had anything to scrape. Give her blog a read and see what you think.
  2. Call the Dentist, they may need to change your recall schedule if you have plaque build-up. It is very important to maintain good oral hygiene, while wearing braces, so they will be nice when the braces come off.
